Head representing the Oni, sovereign of the Ife Kingdom of Benin. It is a beautiful original figure made by hand in metal alloy using the lost wax technique with a beautiful patina and the same aesthetics of the pieces found in the 19th century in the mythical city of Igbo-Ukwu. Not much has been done in depth yet in this art (from the 12th to the 15th centuries) but these heads could have had commemorative functions. Some of these pieces are open to serve as a display stand for the king's elephant tusks. The art of Benin developed mostly to honor the king, or Oba, who has reigned, with his ancestors, since the 15th century. From Ife come the most famous works of Yoruba and Igbo art. When the European colonists discovered these pieces, they thought at first that they had discovered Atlantis and mentioned the finding of 'classical sculpture on African soil' Like the vast majority of primitive African art, it fits perfectly in decorations of various styles, even the most minimalist , but especially in contemporary classics. (Surely you have seen many examples in decoration magazines since they are common in the best houses). Although it is metal, it is not necessary to rub it with metal cleaner, just dust it from time to time, since that patina is its most striking feature.
