Beautiful masks of the Punu ethnic group traditionally used in rituals that mark the passage to adulthood, marriage or death. This ceremony, known as Okuyi, is practiced by many Bantu peoples in Central and West Africa. The okuyi mask is the idealized representation of the female face, which includes scarifications and the toupee-shaped hairstyle that is so popular in Bantu societies. The nose, however, is uncommon in these ethnic groups, as are the eyebrows or the eyes. The white tone of the face represents peace. It is a very expressive carving whose features try to convey serenity. It is made of soft wood pigmented with kaolin. The Punu are an ethnic group without political hierarchies or power structures that base their way of life on the cult of their ancestors. They are established in southwestern Gabon. This mask comes from the Lambarené region.
